Background: Kurosaki Hisoka is a shinigami (Death God). In YnM, shinigami serve Enma-Daioh, king of the dead, in dealing with arrivals to the underworld and making sure the afterlife’s court system operates efficiently. He is assigned as Tsuzuki Asato’s partner, and is an empath.

Hisoka was originally born into the Kurosaki household, a noble and traditional family who traced their lineage back to samurai warriors. He would have been the seventeenth head had he continued living. Because of his family’s old-fashioned views, he had a strict upbringing, and was fully trained in traditional martial arts, archery, and swordsmanship. However, his parents did not take it too well when his empathetic abilities began to manifest. They saw Hisoka as a disgrace for possessing such an “abnormal” trait and locked him away in a barren cell to discourage him from using it.

It was at the age of thirteen that Hisoka first encountered his murderer, Muraki Kazutaka, a serial-killing doctor. Taking a walk one night, Hisoka witnessed Muraki brutally murdering a woman under a sakura tree and was seen. The man then raped and tortured Hisoka, carving an elaborate death curse on his chest, arms, and back (which now takes the form of burning, red scars that seem to be visible only when Muraki is active/close by or Hisoka thinks intently about him). When done, Muraki erased the boy’s memories of the event and let the curse do its job. It took three years for the curse to finally kill him off, each moment more agonizing then the previous. Not remembering what had happened, Hisoka and his family simply believed that it was an illness.

After he died, Hisoka became a shinigami to investigate his own death. He regained his memories of the event during a case and seeks revenge against Muraki.

Personality: Hisoka isn’t what you would call a people-person. In the simplest terms, he can be blunt, irritable, stubborn, temperamental, and tactless. He is also quick to take offense and is generally inconsiderate about others and their feelings. His initial reaction to any situation is usually a snarky retort. He seems to look upon other people as jobs or tasks to be dealt with, in an efficient and professional manner, but without feeling or attachment. After going through Muraki and his family though, one can’t really blame him for lacking in the “developing relationships” area or for his general mistrust of people.

Never having known unconditional love and care, Hisoka is practically incapable of trusting anyone, since doing so would leave an opening for betrayal and hurt, something he constantly guards himself against (However, he is unswervingly loyal to whoever does manage to gain his trust and is protective and supportive of those he cares about, in his own way). He attempted to gain his parents’ love and respect by being worthy enough, strong enough, good enough, etc. And because this failed, he has been left with feelings of inadequacy and defectiveness, which he submerges under layers of denial, and self-protection, making him defensive. Because of this, he lashes out at anybody who implies that he is weak or valueless, and has a very strong need to prove himself. Understandably, he doesn’t want to be helpless and weak again, so Hisoka is always trying to attain more power, courage, and strength, often pushing his boundaries. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to know where or when to stop, and also often rushes into dangerous situations that are way beyond him. He sets and measures himself by standards that are just impossible. Though seemingly reserved and calculating, trying to maintain a mature and composed front, Hisoka also lets himself get carried away and acts upon his impulses more than thinking about them.

He has the tendency to believe the worst of people and meets others with the pre-developed notion that they will betray him. He has grown to admire, respect, be friendly with, and make connections with several co-workers and people he's met on cases, but Hisoka's cynicism is deeply-rooted. He expects people to let him down before even meeting them, never giving them a chance. So though he is usually formal, cooperative, polite, and mannerly - he's closed-off. Because of this, he is usually surprised and overwhelmed when faced with genuine kindness or affection. He is also reluctant to be touched because of his empathy.

One of the people who have had the biggest effect on Hisoka's personality is his partner Tsuzuki (who brings out qualities in Hisoka that counter the hatred and anger he feels for his parents and Muraki) and Hisoka is guarded even with him. Because of Tsuzuki, though Hisoka's first impulse in any situation is to make a short-tempered insult, he has increasingly begun to apologize or to stop himself before doing so. He's also now more prone to little acts of kindness here and there (but he is usually embarrassed if any attention is drawn to them). Nevertheless, even though he has come to trust Tsuzuki, that vulnerability is something he organically hates and tries to shield himself from. Hisoka refuses to truly acknowledge the extent of Tsuzuki’s importance to him because he knows that if he did, losing him would be far more painful. So because he cannot quite admit how close he is to Tsuzuki, he constantly pushes him away, insults him, and tries to keep up at least the appearance of distance between them.

Therefore, Hisoka’s overall personality is made up of many different traits: a quick wit, loyalty, a short temper, politeness, a love for reading, bitterness, determination, courage, diligence, sarcasm, passion, intelligence, reservation, directness, a dry sense of humor, crankiness, being quick to anger, resentment, a need to be taken seriously, protectiveness, compassion, etc.
